18th Division, including 11th Royal Fusiliers of 54 Brigade, arrived in France at end of July, 1915 and after a period of training moved to the Somme area, recently take over from the French Army. On 18th January, 1916, they left there rest billets at Morlancourt and moved into the nearby front line trenches where they stayed until 26th January. 2 men were killed during this tour, during which enemy machine-gun and rifle fire were fairly active. The Battalion Diary entry for 20th January records it as being ‘a quiet day’, but not quiet enough to prevent Joseph Card from being killed in action. |
